Natural remedies for nail fungus

Beautiful hands and feet play an important part in the personality. Healthy, beautiful and shiny nails are not only the sign of good health but add in the beauty of hands and feet. Weak, pale or infected nails shatter your confidence level too.

The skin of our hand and feet are more inclined to drying and is presented to extreme temperatures and requires better cleaning. To maintain the youngness of the hand and feet skin, do not take for granted your hands as ignoring them may prompt spotting, collagen lessening and thinness of the skin because of drying.

Moreover, nails of hands and feet may also infect with fungus which should be addressed quickly. Toenails are most prone to the development of fungus because of poor hygiene as most of the time our feet are inside the shoes (mostly working men and women).

It happens because feet become sweaty in shoes which are the most favorable condition for the fungus to grow there.

Natural remedies for nail fungus

Although there are too many advanced techniques like laser treatments and medications, people mostly opt for home remedies because these are safe and efficient. Let us have a look at some of the most effective natural home remedies for nail fungus

  • Seed extract of grapefruit

Grapefruit seed extract is famous for its anti-fungal properties as this fruit is rich in flavonoids. Seed extract of grapefruit can easily get from good grocery stores both in spray and dropper form. Apply extract with a cotton swab from a dropper or spray on infected area with a sprayer.

Repeat the procedure at least twice a day. Moreover, grapefruit seed extract is also found in the form of capsules. You can take these capsules orally to treat the fungal infection systematically.


  • Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar not just uses in cooking, but it also has anti-fungal properties. To treat nail fungus, one can use apple cider vinegar by diluting it in warm water. Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and warm water in a tub and soak infected nail in it for 15 to 20 minutes. Make sure to dry the nail afterward to avoid any further harm by absorbing water (moisture) in it.

  • Tea tree and lavender oil

Some of the essential oils like tea tree oil, olive oil, and lavender oil have some healing properties to treat fungal infections. You can use these essential oils in various combinations.

Mix equal parts of olive and concentrated tea tree oil to make a remedy. Apply this mixture several times in a day for desired results. You can also use the concoction of tea tree oil and lavender oil to treat nail fungus.

Mix one part tea tree oil in two parts lavender oil and apply it on infected areas five to six times in a day.

  • Garlic

Garlic can heal fungal infection actually in short span of time. You need to use it internally and externally both. Externally, all you need to do is to extract some juice of garlic by chopping it down. Apply this juice twice or thrice a day for useful results.

Let it dry completely onto the surface of the nail for optimum results. Chewing two to three garlic cloves daily in the morning along with the topical application of garlic juice will work like magic to heal nail fungus.

  • Hydrogen peroxide

As we now know that fungus is living organism and can spread itself from one nail to another and so on. Thus, therefore, it is necessary to stop the propagation of fungus. For this purpose, hydrogen per oxide is a chemical compound which comes in handy and can easily be available at pharmacies too.

Take equal parts of vinegar and 3% hydrogen per oxide and dip infected nail in it. Dry nails afterward. Treating nail fungus by hydrogen per oxide is also known as oxidative therapy.

  • Oregano oil

Oregano essential oil is not only associated with pizza but has some properties to kill fungus too. Add ½ Tsp of oregano oil in 1 liter of warm water and soak fungal nail in it for 20 to 30 minutes.

Oregano oil not only helps in treating fungus but also retain the moisture of the skin. Oregano oil is rich in carvacrol and thymol which helps in the healing of fungal infections, and it is also the great replacement of many antibiotics.

  • Listerine

Listerine is famous to prevent cavities. Using it as a foot soak is the useful home remedy to treat nail fungus. Fill the tub with one part Listerine with two parts of warm water and soak your feet in it for approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Repeat this procedure on a daily basis to annihilate the fungus completely. Using Listerine not only helps to treat fungus but also potent agent to remove dead skin. You can also apply Listerine directly onto the fungal nail with the cotton ball if you are running short of time.

  • Change in lifestyle

Try to adopt some healthy habits as far as your lifestyle is concerned. Always use properly fitted shoes. Too much tight shoes may aggravate the condition. Moreover, wear cotton socks to absorb the moisture of the feet to the maximum extent.

In summers, wear open sandals from back or front or flip flops to ensure the proper ventilation to the nails and the skin of the feet. At the end of the day try to take a foot bath in Epsom salt as a preventive measure. Avoid wearing nail colors for the extended time. Remember, nails also need to breathe. Changing in lifestyles will yield good results in the long run.

  • Aloe Vera gel

Aloe Vera is famous for beauty and hair treatment. The plant has more than beauty secrets. Aloe Vera plant’s green skin contains an extensive variety of chemical compounds, amino acids, and enzymes which give astringent, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic benefits.

You can grow this plant easily at your home. Clean your feet and apply Aloe Vera gel directly on infected nail twice or more in a day for better results.


  • Vitamin E

Vitamin E is famous for its the antioxidant properties. Apply oil of vitamin E directly on your nail bed and massage it gently onto the nail and around the skin of nail until it absorbs completely.

Repeat the procedure every night before going to bed to completely vanish the nail fungus. Vitamin E oil is available in different form like capsules and in bottles too.

  • Turmeric

From thousands of years, turmeric is known for its healing wound properties. It’s a yellow powder and popular spice in South Asia. Polyphenolic antioxidant curcumin is present in turmeric and has powerful medicinal value.

A thick paste of turmeric made in water can be applied directly onto the infected nail to reap fruits of benefits from it.

  • Coconut oil

Coconut oil is also among one of the antifungal ingredients. Before applying coconut oil, take a foot bath in the mixture of one part vinegar and two parts warm water for 30 minutes. You can rub coconut oil around the nail. Now pour some coconut oil under the nail with a dropper. Do it every night before bed.
