The lifestyle adopted by people nowadays is considerably different from what it used to be in the past century. The young adults and teenagers specifically face a variety of new problems now that can affect their health.
According to the recent research, the social jet lag may cause people to experience harmful side effects on their overall health along with disturbance in the temperament.
What Is a Social Jet Lag?
The term is basically used for the habit adopted by a majority of the people today which is staying in bed longer and waking up later than the usual routine on weekends.
This new research was published in the academic journal Sleep and was headed by senior author Michael A. Grandner, Ph.D., director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona.
The research studied the sleeping patterns of 984 adults aged between 22 to 60 years.
The study asked a various question from respondents regarding their sleeping pattern and also collected and analyzed the data related to various factor such as insomnia, age, race, gender, income, occupation, ethnicity, education, sleep duration.
To get cleaner picture respondents were expected to answer the questionnaire about depression, fatigue, history of cardiovascular disease, and the state of sleepiness.
Previous studies on social jet lag have suggested negative side effects on people’s health such as there are higher risks associated with obesity, diabetes, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
The study thus found the relation between social jet lags and worsen mood, sleepiness, fatigue and overall poorer health.
It was also said that one-hour social jet lag increases the risk of heart diseases by eleven percent. Furthermore, every hour of social jet lag increased the chances of poor to fair health by 28.3 % when compared with the standards of ‘excellent’ health.
Lead author Sierra B. Forbush, an undergraduate research assistant in the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, pointed out that sleep regularity irrespective of the sleep duration can alone be significant enough to guarantee excellent health.
She also added that regular sleep schedule is necessary to have a regularity in sleep. And this sleep regularity is, without a doubt, an inexpensive, relatively simple preventative treatment for many of the health problems including the heart diseases as well.
The results found that school going children have more social jet lag compared to college going student also the people with higher income have more minutes of jet lag compared with their lower income counterparts.
Additionally is it also important to note that according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) young and adults are advised to sleep for 7 hours at least to meet all the standards of excellent health.
Young adult and teenagers tend to face more sleeping disorders when compared with people at a higher age.
What Can Be Done?
To get a more sound sleep, it is however recommended to reduce the use of technology when you lay on the bed, avoid aggressive exercise two hours before you intend to sleep.
In addition, keeping your diet balance and digestive system working properly is also mandatory since apart from depression, anxiety and mood upsets, health problems may also contribute to a disturbance in sleeping patterns and might affect the quality of the sleep too.
Therefore problem in any one part of metabolism and makeup of the body can produce a chain effect may cause disruption in other systems too. Thus it is always recommended to develop your life according to a system and routine.
