Healthy hair is undoubtedly an essential feature in defining one’s beauty. But have we realized that, not only it signifies beauty but the hair also speak about our internal health too?
Except for few cases, the majority of hair related problems have a direct link with our unhealthy habits and rough routine. The most common hair epidemic is the hair fall and hair loss.
With the daily breakage and replacement of new tissues with the old ones, hair fall isn’t an issue unless your body is able to induce hair fall with the growth of new hair.
The problem comes when it is disproportionate in the rate of hair falling to the growth of new hair. In most severe cases the body’s ability to reproduce dies resulting in patches on the scalp.
The slower growth and poor texture of newly grown hair may all indicate the problems with your hair.
The reasons may vary from person to person, and often the hair loss can be the aftereffect if a person has gone through any major surgical procedure or have been affected by any other serious major serious illness.
In such cases, however, the treatments can only be started after the complete consultation from the doctors. However on the other side, in normal cases, the hair loss can be associated with the low levels of folic acid and iron in the body.
What is folic acid?
Folic acid or folate in a simpler word is a B- complex vitamin which helps regenerate the tissues of hair and skin. The deficiency of folic acid may be a possible reason for hair loss.
How Folic acid help in hair loss?
Folic acid or iron is basically responsible for transporting oxygen to your red blood cells. Deficiency or lower levels or folic acid may mean the cells in the scalp of the head does not have enough oxygen to carry the function of hair growth.
It is also important to note that, this deficiency of folic acid and lack of oxygen to transported to the cell of the scalp in men may inhibit the cells to produce a chemical called ATP. This chemical is responsible for the growth of hair.
Inability to produce ATP, the cells uses the male hormone testosterone to produce ATP. the high levels of testosterone in men is responsible for hair loss and baldness.
The iron and folic acid intake hence can help treat the bitterness of the hair to moderate hair fall to even alopecia.
Also folic acid is responsible for the hair color and its thickness. Many types of research have also established the fact that folic acid can be used to treat the vitamin deficiency induced hair loss.
In a study at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, Canada, a study was conducted in which a calf suffering from brown patches on the body was treated with the moderate intake of iron and folic acid for over a period of three weeks. The results obtained showed that calf recovered from hair loss in less than two months.
How to get folic acid intake?
First of all, it is important to note that, folic acid or vitamin B9 does not work in isolation. It rather needs a combination of other B- complex vitamins to work effectively.
A balanced intake of other vitamins such as vitamin B12 and B6 are equally necessary for proper results. Also, the results would not be overnight rather it can a take a span of three to four months before visible results could be seen.
In most severe cases, folic acid supplements can be recommended along with a diet high in iron.
Fortified foods, dark green leafy vegetables, meat, liver and dairy products are all good source for obtaining folic acid.
