Depression in Teenagers – What do Studies Say?

As reported in the journal Pediatrics, the Major Depressive Episode among teenagers has almost risen 37% from  2005-2014. Teenagers who are considered to be moody and anxious are now majorly suffering from chronic depression and other mental health issues such as anxiety.

Although, if we talk about the life of a new generation, then the statistics reveal that most of the problematic issues such as drinking, smoking, drug addiction have reduced amongst teens and adolescents.

Similarly, the level of teenage pregnancies is also at its lowest level, but there is a significant increase in mental health problems among children aged between 12-20 years.

As published in Times, almost 3 million teenagers report at least one episode of severe depression that also includes low self-esteem and self-harm and almost 2 million of kids suffer from chronic depression that even impedes their daily functioning.

The mental-health crisis is not limited to depression but also includes increment in the rate of anxiety and stress which has increased up by 70% among young adults.

Similarly, statistics have also been revealed by some Psychological departments of reputed universities that the psychiatric condition of young people has worsened from 2009 and the numbers of teenagers facing these issues have doubled by now.

In a research report published in 2016, reported that 93% teachers have observed mental disorders among children and teenagers of secondary classes in which 90% of the cases were of very severe nature that included self –harm and suicidal attacks as well.

For the same purpose, The American College Health Association surveyed around 100,000 different college students and found that only 84% of the students feel unable to cope with others, 79% are exhausted by the daily routine, 60 % feel very sad without any reasons and more than half are experiencing depression and anxiety.

Teachers have also revealed that most of the times children are under the stress of exams which, with time, turns into mental illness.

They seem to be under pressure of getting better results which would decide their career and future; this kind of mindset brings anxiety in their behavior.

This anxiety is then transferred to the family or friend’s environment which minimizes their value overall and disturbs their personality.

In the research by Department of Human and Health services, it has also revealed that mental-health crisis is double in the girls of age 12 to 17 as compared to boys.

The rate of mental health is on the rise but stress of school/college is not the only contributing factor.

Other things that affect mental health condition include excessive use of technology and social media which has amplified the nature of problems and has given new forms to express themselves; Cyberbullying is one of its examples.

The effects of technology highly impact young people’s moods, manners, feelings, and body language. That is why it is also regarded as one of the prominent reasons for the increase in mental-health crisis among teens.

Apart from the above-mentioned reasons, sometimes it is very difficult for the parents and teachers to confront their children and know the reason behind as teenagers are mostly reluctant to discuss their matters with parents and sometimes parents are too slow to respond them.

In this kind of situation, it is waste of time to blame the parents or the young person because mental illness is caused by a different combination of factors and it can strike anybody anywhere, may be the environment at home or some socio-economic factor which they can’t share with anyone is disturbing them.

But proper treatments under a specialist can really help them fight against it and welcome the new world with a ray of positivity.

It has also been concluded that treating this problem is really easy at early ages as compared to diagnose at a mid-age level, so it is the duty of both teachers and parent to notice the changing behavior and attitude problems of their children and at least try their best to find out the reason behind.
