Does Coconut Oil Pulling Work?

Coconut oil pulling is one of the best ways to have excellent oral hygiene and to prevent any sort of bacterial or fungal infections. Recently, there has been a lot of hype of this specific technique for an advanced dental care routine.

What made coconut pulling popular suddenly?

The latest studies on oral hygiene have concentrated on two things – new techniques for improvements in dental health and the effectiveness of flossing. Researchers have claimed that flossing may not be as good as people think.

In fact, many of the researchers have claimed that coconut oil pulling can even be more effective than flossing for a number of reasons including it proving other benefits along with protection from bacteria or fungi including whitening of teeth.

What exactly is oil pulling?

It is a natural technique that has its origins in Ayurvedic medicine and is actually called gandusha in Ayurveda. Coconut oil pulling is a good, all-natural way for detoxification and protection especially because it is simple and easy.

All a person needs for coconut oil pulling is a tablespoon of coconut oil or even one of the other oils to swish in his/her mouth for about 15-20 minutes. Unlike flossing, there are little or no chances of irritating the gums accidentally.

Oil pulling works wonders on the oral cavity and detoxifies it thoroughly similar to how a dishwashing soap cleans the dishes. It has the ability to remove all of the harmful particles and toxins from the mouth.

This can successfully improve the dental health as well as creates an ideal environment for the working of toothpaste or any other dental liquid on the teeth and gums for the prevention of oral issues like cavities or disease.

The technique has been used for hundreds of years in the Indian subcontinent as it can help with many oral health issues in ways such as:

  • Killing bad breath
  • Whitening teeth
  • Treating tooth decay
  • Strengthening gums and teeth
  • Healing bleeding (or damaged) gums
  • Preventing cavities
  • Getting rid of cracked lips
  • Improving acne
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Boosting immune system
  • Preventing heart disease
  • Soothe throat dryness and throat ache

In addition to all of the benefits mentioned above, oil pulling has also been observed to help greatly with temporomandibular joint or what is more commonly referred to as lockjaw or TMJ.

Even though there are only a number of studies on the oil pulling, it has been reported that coconut oil pulling has been practiced a lot in place of other techniques like flossing especially after its popularity in the Western world.

Currently, there are around seventeen studies on the benefits offered by coconut oil pulling. Although it took a lot of time for oil pulling to catch the attention of the researchers, these previous have made the way for more in the future.

One of those studies is the one published in Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine that concluded that oil pulling is one of the safest and natural ways to keep dental problems away and reduce the risk for any oral issues.

The research has also pointed out how oil swishing can affect the general health as in the light of Ayurveda medicine, the tongue is connected to the different organs in the body such as lungs, colon, heart, kidneys, and stomach.

The oil therapy is cited to be both preventive and curative as it can help with over 30 health conditions and chronic illnesses.

This study is particularly known by other researchers as it also highlighted the effects of oil pulling on the general health of a person while other studies are mostly concentrated on the benefits for oral health.

What is common in all of the studies is that nearly all of them prefer coconut oil over other oils. Where other oils are also good for use, coconut oil is easiest to absorb and offers the highest number of benefits.

Other oils that can be used are sunflower seed oil, sesame oil, and olive oil but coconut oil remains to be the most recommended and used.

The technique typically has no harmful effects and can be done by anyone including children and pregnant or nursing women with the exception of some cases where the people are themselves uncomfortable while doing it.

Oil pulling can be performed at any time of the day. According to most people, the results such as no bad breath, whitening of teeth, better dental health, and others appear in two weeks or even one for some.
