Omega-3 Supplements Can Help ADHD – Research Suggests

If you are a parent of a child with ADHD or have any relative having the health condition, you have probably heard of the ADHD diet repeatedly which include an increased amount of Omega-3 fatty acid sources.

There have previously been a lot of claims and studies on whether Omega-3 fatty acids help someone struggling with ADHD but they have always received mixed views.

Where the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acid is known for its essential benefits especially since the body is unable to produce it on its own, the advantages it had for people with ADHD symptoms not that popular up till now.

Recently, there have been various studies conducted to corroborate the claim of Omega-3 fatty acids being specifically beneficial for ADHD including the meta-analysis published in the Journal Neuropsychopharmacology which released a convincing argument in support.

What points did the meta-analysis make?

The study looked at the trials from ten different clinical trials focused on the effects of consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids on children and on teenagers.

Seven of these trials were randomized controlled and consisted of around 500 children and adolescents that checked whether taking Omega-3 supplements had any effect or improved the symptoms and signs of ADHD

Additionally, another part of the research also consisted of three case-controlled studies that were particularly for the effects of two different types of Omega-3 fatty acids.

The conclusion of meta-analysis was extremely positive and added to one of the most effective natural remedies for the symptoms of ADHD that would most probably be highly recommended by health practitioners.

The children and the adolescents that were given Omega-3 supplements in every single one of the seven studies showed that it significantly reduced the problems of inattention and hyperactivity in comparison with the ones that were given a placebo.

Secondly, there was also an improvement in cognitive function in the children who took Omega-3 supplements such as fish oil supplements.

Three of the final studies included in the meta-analysis discovered that adolescents and children with ADHD had lower levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both of these are the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.

In accordance with the latest statistics, around 11 percent of the children between the ages of 4 and 17 which is approximately 6.4 million are diagnosed with ADHD each year and the number seems to keep rising.

The meta-analysis clearly highlighted that not getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids can be a big factor when it comes to ADHD. The way diets have changed over recent years, it is possible that it has a connection with increased reported cases of ADHD.

Looking at the Standard American Diet, it is clear that any person can easily develop an Omega-3 fatty acids deficiency since so much of it is filled with empty calories, sugary and ultra-processed foods, and the foods that cause inflammation.

While there is an option of Omega-3 supplements for improving ADHD caused by Omega-3 deficiency, the suggested way to improve the symptoms of ADHD is through incorporating foods that naturally have it into the diet.

Recently, there has also been a rise in processed foods that have added Omega-3 fatty acids in them. You can even find protein powder, margarine, and bread with fortified Omega-3 fatty acids.

However, these products contain a huge number of chemicals and preservatives. There is more harm in consuming such foods than the advantage. It is better to stay away from processed food in general and get Omega-3 in your diet from natural sources.

In case of children, Omega-3 fatty acids supplements in the form of fish oil capsules along with a healthy diet containing other sources such as fish, nuts, and seeds are usually recommended by the doctors now.

Since the body is unable to produce Omega-3 fatty acids on its own, adding more of it into your diet even without a supplement can bring great health benefits.
