Pregnancy After 35-What Should You Know?

The concept of family and bringing up children has taken a new turn with these changed lifestyles of people. In the world full of competition, planning your family needs particular individual requirements such as establishing a career, buying a house, etc. These factors are different for all people but let’s just accept that we all have goals when it comes to family planning.

For most of the people, reaching a certain level of a professional career to support the family is the ultimate desire. The following factor with this fact is a delay in motherhood. For now, the average age where most of the woman want to start a family is 30 and above. Many of us don’t know that aging is not as far away as we may assume, it means that the aging process starts after the body makes to the maximum level of growth. It is now near to 30 when the early signs of aging start to appear. At this stage, planning a pregnancy may need a knowledge of certain things. There are risks involved with a mid age pregnancy.

A research data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from the year 2016 tells that first time in last three decades the number of pregnant moms in 30-35 years of age is much higher than pregnant women in early twenties. This has beaten the universal motherhood age trend which was the initially early twenties for long. In last decade, the average age for women to be a mother is 28 which was not the same before. It was 26 in 2015 and even younger before that.

The experts believe that this age is more of a mental age and not the physical age. It is now related to a woman’s planning for future, how she see her family, her profession, and her next life. The maturity of ideas in the early thirties has made this factor work.

The reason to delay the children is not just dependent on the mother. A father to have equal shares. Studies suggest that people who plan a baby after 35 years of age have certain factors to be noted. It could be anything from higher education, contraception improvising, social structures, cultural shifts, responsibility, inflexibility, economic instability, unemployment and much more. A more emotional reason is that women are now sure that the IVF is here to help, so there is no need to start a family when there are various instabilities. They can always have it at the later stage.

Pregnant women after 35 years of age, having their first baby are called advanced maternal age (AMA) or older mothers. They are also referred as an elderly primigravida or elderly primipara.

Risks of delaying pregnancy until age 35 years or older

The difficulties which may strike to a woman which decides to have a baby after 35 years old are as follows.

Low Fertility

As a woman ages, the productivity is affected. This age brings a decline in egg production and quality of the egg. The fertility also reduces in men as appeared as low sperm count, semen volume and motility. This is just age related factor which suggests that the aging process has been started which is now affecting the efficacy of all body functions. So a pregnancy after 35 years of age may not be easy, for both men and women.

Miscarriage

One of the most common risks with a late pregnancy is a miscarriage. It is less in younger women because they are more likely to give proper growth environment in their wombs for the baby. The risk of miscarriage in older ages is more than 70%, so it is a very sensitive factor. The reason behind this miscarriage is also the quality of their egg which declines with age.

Genetic Problems

The genetic risks increase with age. A late pregnancy increases the baby to catch any common genetic defect such as Down Syndrome or children with congenital anomalie. Research suggest that genetic process of recombination plays a significant role to face a condition like down syndrome. These risks are even higher in pregnancies after 40.

Stillbirth

Stillbirth is another most common risk in old age pregnancies. It is higher in mothers who are having their first baby at old age. Although it is believed to be related to the age, there is no scientific reason behind it. It is still under research.

Birth Complications

There are possibilities or birth complications such as impaired uterus, fewer contractions, sensitivity to oxytocin, and much more. It can even cause a delay in birth. However, the age is not responsible for the low birth weight of the baby and preterm birth.

All these factors suggest that pregnancy at a later age needs proper care and administration. The mothers to bee should have all this information, either from their doctor or by a personal research on the internet.
