Pain in the abdomen is discomfort that is felt in the area of the compartment beneath the ribs or in the pelvis. It originates from organs inside the stomach area or organs adjoining the tummy. Stomach pain is felt in the mid-region.

The stomach area bound anatomically by the lower edge of the ribs and above the diaphragm, the pelvic bone beneath, and the flanks on both sides. The term stomach pain, for the most part, is used to portray distress beginning from organs inside the stomach or abdominal cavity.

Organs of the belly incorporate the stomach, small digestive tract, colon, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas. The lowermost segment of the abdomen is the pelvis, which contains the urinary bladder and rectum, and also the prostate organ in men, and the uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries in ladies.

The abdominal pain does not sound as a serious matter of concern to many individuals. In fact, it is suggested that do not neglect abdominal pain as it may be an alarm of some serious health issues. An abdominal pain happens because of many causes, and we should be aware of it.

Possible causes of abdominal pain:

Stomach pain is caused by irritation or sometimes inflammation of an organ like an infected appendix, diverticulitis, colitis. Abdominal pain can also happen by extending or extension of an organ like deterrent of the digestive system, blockage of a bile duct or tube by gallstones, swelling of the liver with hepatitis.

Abdominal pain also occurs due to the loss of the supply of blood to an organ. Pain in certain areas of abdomen like upper abdomen, lower abdomen above the navel or lower the navel happens because of the following causes.

Pregnancy cramps:

If you are an expecting mom, then you may experience abdominal pain because of many reasons. These are sometimes called pregnancy cramps. Some of the leading causes of abdominal cramps during pregnancy are:

  • Implantation of the embryo in the walls of the uterus during the first trimester.
  • Expansion of uterus wall during the 2nd trimester.
  • False labor pains during the third trimester

These pregnancy cramps are not the matter of concern until unless you find it again and again with some vaginal discharge or break into the water. It is the time when you must consult your doctor.

Food allergy

The person will experience pain in lower abdomen with food allergy. You may suffer from diarrhea, constipation or irritable bowel syndrome. Hypersensitivity with food happens when you have weak immune system, and it attacks the food you take.

The bacteria multiply its growth and may move towards the kidney. Moreover, bacteria from any other infection can move towards kidneys through the blood stream however it is the rare case.

Dysmenorrhea:

It is the medical term for menstrual cramps. Women mostly experience lower abdominal cramps associated with back pain in some cases. The process of menstruation triggers by a substance called prostaglandins, and it produces in the lining of the uterus during menstruation.

It causes lower abdominal pain and muscular contractions. Sometimes it may also associate with nausea and dizziness. During contractions and abdominal cramps, blood flow to the lining of the uterus is inhibited. Blood flow to the lining of the uterus is inhibited due to the high levels of leukotrienes (the inflammatory mediator) during menstruation.

 

Gallbladder stones:

If you experience pain in upper abdomen originating from the right side, then it may be due to gallbladder stones. The pain is episodic and will frequently take after dinners. However, in most cases gallbladder stones don’t show any symptoms, it may cause sudden abdominal pain if the stone is blocking any one of the bile ducts and also known as biliary colic.

Ulcer:

Ulcer or gastritis may be the cause of abdominal pain. A person with ulcer experience burning sensation associated with pain in the upper midline of the abdomen. Ulcers form in the stomach when excess gastric acids, microscopic organisms, drugs or other poisons make harm and little openings to the mucosa.

Mucosa is the tissue that lines the stomach and parts of the small digestive tract and different organs to shield particles from spilling out.

 

Hyperparathyroidism:

Parathyroid glands located in the neck are responsible for the regulation of the levels of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus in the body. However, too much secretion of parathyroid leads to a condition termed as hyperparathyroidism and associated with severe upper abdominal pain.

Pancreatic cancer:Sadly pancreatic cancer is known as “silent cancer ” and early symptoms are sometimes vague and false. However, if you are experiencing abdominal pain in the upper abdomen which is spreading to back, then you may have pancreatic cancer.

Moreover, if you will feel relieved on leaning forward, then it may be a potential threat to the deadly pancreatic cancer. Other signs include loss of appetite associated with nausea and vomiting and feeling pain in abdomen when eating something.

Inflammation of appendix:

Inflammation of Appendix also known as appendicitis. The appendix is little blind ended tube near the junction of the small and large intestine and harmless. It is the medical emergency and often requires prompt and quick action to remove it, or it will be fatal.

Appendix inflammation occurs when it gets blocked by stool or any other foreign particle. If it is not treated quickly, it may burst out and spread its poison to the stomach which will be life threatening condition.

Constipation

If you experience irritable bowel movement and pain in abdominal pain, then it may be due to constipation. It is also associated with back pain. Constipation is infrequent stools or feeling difficulty in passing stool.

This condition happens because of the lack or absence of water content in the large intestine. Sometimes, patient unable to empty the bladder. Consequently, it leads to a condition called constipation.

Indigestion

It is most common cause of abdominal pain. The pain results due to the excessive eating of food or due to the unsuitable food. The condition may lead to improper digested food and results in abdominal cramps. Abdominal cramps due to indigestion are associated with nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
