Pain in the left side – What is the reason?

Many of the people feel moderate to intense pain in the left side of the abdomen. Usually, it hits when they are busy rushing between daily life challenges.

There is not much which everyone knows about it but if you are experiencing it daily, it may be a health concern. Let’s know more about it.

What is this pain about?

The lower abdomen consists of the colon and the left ovary in the case of women. A little pain in this area is usually nothing serious and you can ignore it.

Some people may feel pain as a ruminant of any injury, accident or surgery. But none of these is a condition, the reason could be something else.

What could be the reason?

For most of the cases when there is no reason for an accident or injury, the common reason for pain at the left side is due to diverticulitis. This diverticulitis shows up among aging and aged people more.

It has less prevalence in younger people. Diverticula are small pouches that are formed inside the body when the extra pressure hits on them in the colon. They are not something alien and anyone can have them.

Once they are formed, the tearing, swelling or any infection are the possibilities which can initiate such pains. In many cases, the patients feel symptoms that include the following.

  • Mild to high fever
  • Nausea
  • Tenderness feeling
  • Vomiting
  • Not been able to eat
  • Constipation

The situation can be mild to intense. Usually, the pain is not sharp at initial stages. Only the nutritional habits and lifestyle changes can also heal it, only if you know that what is the problem. In extreme cases, the person needs medical help.

Is there no other reason for pain in left side?

Diverticulitis is just the most common reason however it is not the only reason to feel the pain on the left side of the abdomen. There are several other reasons which may or may not be affecting the people.

Additional reasons for pain in left side

Some of the most common reasons among these are as follows.

Indigestion of the food

Digestion of the food is extremely important. Otherwise, it can create many problems especially related to the abdominal side. The feeling of indigestion hits after you finish eating.

The stomach produces gastric juices which help to dissolve the food. This acid can sometimes be problematic and disturb the organs involved in the digestive system.

The pain due to indigestion starts from upper abdomen and goes to lower. It spreads all around and feels at left side. This is not a very serious issue. It is only an uncomfortable situation.

It has some symptoms to check. Some these symptoms are;

  • Feeling of heartburn
  • Bloated abdomen
  • Gas
  • Nausea or vomiting

Gas

Belching and passing the gas are very formal for your digestive system. There is nothing to worry if you feel gaseous exchange. It is a result of food swallowing.

When we eat food some air and gases also make their way till the stomach. After the digestion completes, this extra gas passes out through rectum to the anus.

In extreme gas, a pain persists at the left and right side which is only due to pressure. If you are passing gas more than normal, the following could be the reasons.

  • Overeating
  • Smoking
  • Sensitivity to certain foods
  • Eating acidic foods
  • Unnecessary bacterial invasion at gut

It is not a problem unless it lasts for days or shows some extreme effects with it.

Kidney stones

Another leading reason to feel pain on the left side could be a kidney infection. The infection basically shows stones if the pain is extreme. In medium pain, it may be an initial infection.

Kidneys are located on both sides. Sometimes both of them are infected but many times only one is infected. In case left side pain persists, it shows that only left kidney is infected.

The stones initiate pain when it is tossed inside the kidney. It becomes worse when it reaches to the ureter. In extreme cases, it can even cause a blockage.

This pain due to kidney stones is radiating. There is no specific time to feel it. It comes and goes unlimitedly. Other feelings include;

  • Darker urine
  • Painful urine
  • Foul smelling urine
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills

Kidney stone has no specific cause. There are multiple reasons for diet to lifestyle changes to cause it. Once it is treated or taken out through surgery, the stone is sent for laboratory analysis.

It shows that which type of material it has.  Based on this information, the reason for its formation is predicted. In the case of kidney stones, the patient needs proper medical treatment.

Hernia

A hernia is an effect which is caused due to an internal organ of the body. When in pressure, the internal organs start to push the muscles or the tissues around it. This continuous pushing makes a lump or bulge-like appearance which is called hernia.

This hernia usually shows up at abdomen or groin. Some more symptoms to confirm this situation are as follows.

  • A visible bulge appearing
  • Increasing the size of the bulge
  • Sharp pain
  • Bloated feeling
  • Painful body movements
  • Fever

These are only the general symptoms and they may vary from individual to individual. Some types of a hernia such as a hiatal hernia cannot form a lump anywhere on the body.

The pain on left side is usually due to a hernia in the abdomen. If there are any follow up symptoms, the patient needs to get himself checked by the specialist immediately.

Shingles

Shingles are a less common infection which affects anyone rarely. It is a comeback of the chickenpox zit which sometimes shows the virus again in the form of shingles.

It affects only the older aged people so you are not likely to experience it in young or middle ages.

Shingles look like a red rash which is, in fact, a blister information. It is very painful and can look like a cluster. It can appear anywhere and sometimes there is no blisters only the pain.

It could be the case when you have pain on the left side. The chances are that it may be an initial sigh of a shingles infection. Other symptoms of it are as follows;

  • Burning on skin
  • Numbness of skin
  • Tingling feeling in skin
  • Pain
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Formation of a blister
  • Itching
  • Rashes
  • Swelling

One has to see the doctor if he is feeling any of these symptoms. The vaccine for shingles is a good way to reduce the risk of it affecting you at any later stage of the life.  Once infected, the treatment takes the time to completely end it.

All these reasons can make a person feel pain on the left side of abdominal. These are only general infections and sometimes the actual reason is more complicated than these.

Some of these reasons are gender specific, they only affect men or they only affect women. Also, it could be conditional i.e. after effect of a certain health problem.
