US Started First Human Trial For COVID-19 Medicine

US has started human clinical trials for the first medicine for prevention and cure of coronavirus.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. on Thursday, announced in a press release that they had started trials for REGN-COV2.

REGN-COV2 is an anti body combination for treatment and prevention of COVID-19. It is the first trial of its type in US.

Dr. George Yancopoulos, president and chief scientific officer of Regeneron, said “we have created a unique antiviral antibody cocktail with the potential both to prevent and treat infection, REGN-COV2 could have a major impact on public health by slowing spread of the virus and providing a needed treatment for those already sick – and could be available much sooner than a vaccine.”

The trial will consist of four different areas to test the medicine; hospitalized patients, non-hospitalized patients, people who are at higher risk, (such as health care workers, doctors and others who are exposed to the virus) and fourth, uninfected people with close exposure to a coronavirus patient.

Yancopoulos also said that world needs multiple solutions for the COVID-19. He said that innovative biopharma industry is working hard to help maximum people with “a variety of complementary approaches.”

In the making of the medicine, Regeneron scientists checked hundreds of anti bodies in mice.(The mice were genetically modified) They also analyzed anti bodies from recovered patients. Scientists chose the two most potent and virus-neutralizing bodies for clinical trials.

The scientists used the combination of both in a medication hoping that it will be effective in treating and preventing the virus. It can protect elder people with weak immune systems.

This medication does not act like vaccine and doesn’t provide permanent protection from the virus. Its effects is temporary and only will prevent the virus for some time, however, this is a lot faster than vaccine.

There are more than 7.4 million confirmed COVID-19 positive cases across the world. There have been 417,100 or even more deaths. Most of these cases are from the US. US leading with 2.13 million COVID-19 positive cases and 117k deaths.
