When To Get Tested For COVID-19?

Health officials across the world report numerous COVID-19 cases daily. Almost all the countries are unable to conduct enough tests. Timely detection of any disease increases the chances of safety.

COVID-19 Tests

Coronavirus’s test includes polymerase chain reaction(PCR) diagnostic test that is a nasal swab. There is an antibody test also; a blood test that can tell whether you had an infection in the past or not.

When To Get Yourself Tested

According to Amira Roess, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University, people exposed to the virus who have had contact with a confirmed case should get tested whether or not they have symptoms.

She also said that people with no symptoms and no contact should not get tested for Covid-19.

The symptoms appear after 5-7 days after contracting the virus but it may take 14 days sometimes.

Dr. Abraar Karan, an internal medicine doctor at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said that if after exposure, you get tested too earlier, it is possible that the report of your test may be negative.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) said that a positive report (for Covid-19) means you should isolate yourself at your home for 10 days.

If you doubt that you have virus, you shouldn’t go anywhere and stay at home for 14 days. Symptoms will appear within 14 days. Experts recommend going for COVID-19 test and contacting your doctor if any symptoms appear.

Director of the University of Minnesota Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and medical director for the Fairview/M Health COVID-19 testing lab, Dr. Sophia Yohe, said that if you have tested positive and you don’t plan to isolate yourself, the test id moot.

Secretary of the state’s Department of Health and Human Services Dr. Mandy Cohen said that people who have attended any kind of mass gatherings, including protests should get tested, even if they have no symptoms.

Cohen further said that people working around a lot of other people need viral testing.

The Bottom Line

To control the spread of Covid-19, it is necessary to test a huge number of people even if they have no symptoms. Otherwise, the virus will spread and would not be controlled because even a single man having virus may spread virus to dozens of people.
