The use of the medicine by the President has sparked the Doctors reaction, as the medicine is disapproved by the US Food and Drug Authority to be used as a safety measure against COVID-19. Studies are being carried out by experts in UK and US to find the possible positive effects of the medicine. However, currently the UK government hasn’t recommended the use of the medicine for preventing COVID-19.
The UK is leading the way on research in the race to find and fast-track potential treatments, and clinical trials are under way to assess whether existing medicines are safe and effective for treating Covid-19.
“This includes hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir, dexamethasone and azithromycin, and we have procured these medicines to support clinical trials. But until we have clear, definitive evidence these treatments are safe and effective, we do not recommend the use of hydroxychloroquine outside of a clinical trial,” the Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said.
The endorsement by the president may cause harm to his followers as predicted by the doctors. The drug is linked with heart diseases and has no proven benefits against coronavirus. The president’s announcement may lead to hoarding by some of the pharma elements.
The UK’s government is demanding the drug in dosages of 220 mg and 250 mg. However, the contract is not fixed to any defined dosage. “In accordance with the terms of this invitation to offer the authority may accept offers for alternative strengths of tablets,” the contract includes. The hydroxychloroquine is being bought in bulk so that if proves to be useful, enough amounts of the drug are available for supply.
Lopinavir-ritonavir is among other drugs included in the contract which is used for HIV positive patients. Dexamethasone, an oral solution used in treatment of allergic conditions, breathing problems and cancer, and 20m azithromycin capsules, effective against gram positive bacteria, in pack of six are included in the contract. £35 million is the total amount fixed for the contract.
President’s recommendation of the medicine isn’t new. He has, repeatedly, used the name as an anti COVID-19 medic. The president is against using face masks for protection which are recommended by the health experts and has been using anti malaria drug for a long time which isn’t suggested by the doctors.
“I’m taking it for about a week and a half now and I’m still here, I’m still here,” Trump justified. “You’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the frontline workers before you catch it, the frontline workers, many, many are taking it,” he told reporters. “I happen to be taking it.” Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro has also endorsed the drug
