Donald Trump, said that he has been taking a hydroxychloroquine pill daily. The pill is disapproved by Food and Drug Authority for being unable to be helpful against the virus, for there is no proven benefit of its usage. The tablet is anti-malaria in its nature.
On Monday, President Trump told the reporters, “’I’ve been taking it for the last week and a half. A pill every day”. He added that he wanted to be transparent to the public and that’s why he is publicly telling this. Trump has been resisting the advice to use face masks as a precautionary measure.
“There are no data that pre-exposure prophylaxis is effective to prevent coronavirus,” said Dr. David Boulware of the University of Minnesota, who is currently testing the same pill for its effectiveness. “It may be. It may not be. We do not know. The only way I would recommend taking hydroxychloroquine is within a clinical trial.”
“I’m not going to get hurt by it,” Trump said, trying to justify his action. “It has been around for 40 years for malaria, for lupus, for other things. I take it. Front-line workers take it. A lot of doctors take it. I take it,” he added.
In the recent weeks, Trump had been talking about the miracle drug in testing. Contradicting from experts’ statements, the President has been promoting the use of malaria drug to avoid COVID-19. But now he has told the reporters that he himself has been using the malaria prevention drug as a safety measure against the coronavirus, on the recommendation of the White House physician.
The COVID-19 has reached the White House affecting two of the staffers. Guidelines have been issued making it a compulsion to use face masks for all those at work. However, the President is not bound to obey, and he’s not following it so.
Early studies showed that hydroxychloroquine could block the virus from attacking cells but later, it didn’t prove. The results in studies conducted to examine were disappointing.
“I think it’s a very bad idea to be taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventive medication,” reacted Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist. “There are no data to support that, there’s no evidence, and in fact there is no compelling evidence to support its use at all at this point.”
The doctors are worried about this dangerous action of the President saying that the public may follow the President, as he is their leader. Doctors further argue that the use of the malaria drug may give rise to health diseases. Trump’s behavior is declared irresponsible by various doctors.
Trump, 73, is daily tested for the COVID-19 and he still doesn’t use face masks. In 2018, reports showed his LDL cholestrol level to be at 143 which is much higher than the standard value i.e.100.
