Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is entering into a modified quarantine for two weeks after a White House staffer is tested positive for COVID-19. Fauci is currently the leading infection expert of the country and has lately been a part of news for his statements contradicting the government’s statements.
Along Fauci, some other senior health officials are also going into quarantine due to an exposure to the staffer who tested positive for the virus. Fauci himself claims to have had a low-risk contact with the affectee. However, Vice President Mike Pence is staying at the White House even though his secretary has also tested positive for the virus.
The spokesman for the Vice President explained that Pence will “continue to follow the advice of the White House Medical Unit and is not in quarantine”. On the other hand, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn are also quarantining.
According to health officials, there are currently 1.3 million cases and nearly 80,000 deaths countrywide and the number is still increasing every day. Although the outbreak has even reached the White House, President Trump is still in favor of lifting the lockdown restrictions.
As announced by Senator Lamar Alexander, the Chairman of Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Robert Redfield and other senior health officials are to testify before the senate remotely regarding the ongoing pandemic and reopening the economy amid the crisis. The call for testimony is followed by Trump Administration blocking him from appearing before the house committee to discuss the situation.
Dr. Fauci has been advising the administration to postpone the plans to lift the lockdown restrictions at least until the number of daily tests for the virus are double. The senior health official warned the government of a second layer of the outbreak. But the President’s push to reopen is working as some states have already been reopened and some are soon to be reopened.
According to University of Washington, if the state allows reopening, the number of fatalities is expected to rise to the double of the current number and then the situation will be out of control leading to cease the health and economy both. Currently, the government is under pressure for both; unemployment rate is rising to 14.7% while the health situation is also deteriorating.
