Many people will think that it is just a saying and it has no real explanation.
No one actually tells you that how does eating an apple keeps the doctor away. But one thing is clear that apples have a high amount of nutrients that are part of a healthy diet. But does it prevent a doctor’s visit? May be or maybe not?
Research provides evidence to validate it
In the year 2015, a research study from the Journal of the American Medical Association investigated this myth. The study “Association Between Apple Consumption and Physician visits” describes that this aphorism, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away,’ has roots in Wales. The very first presence is evident from a publication of 1866 that says, “Eat an apple on going to bed and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.”
The study studied self-reported diets of 8,728 individuals to see how eating one apple has a role in trips to the doctor. For one year, they saw that there was no link of apple-eating with doctor’s visits. The only difference was that apple eaters were using fewer prescription-based medicines than other people. So the apple may have links with “visits to pharmacy” instead of “visits to doctor”.
Nutritional value of apples
Irrespective of apple and visits to doctors, it has enormous health benefits. First, apples have pectin, which is prebiotic. Prebiotics are helpful in digestion as they promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the stomach.
Next in line is vitamin C. Not many people know that apples have high amounts of vitamin C which is a natural immuno-booster. Whenever someone is suffering from cold, a vitamin C rich food or drink helps to relieve the condition. So apple can be a good snack whenever you are sick with flu.
Next, it has boron and quercetin. Boron is a nutrient, which makes bones strong and healthy. It also improves cognitive functions and strengthens brain cells. Quercetin is a flavonoid, which has anti-cancer effects. It is particularly helpful against lungs and breast cancer. It also helps to combat free radical damage.
