Standard American Diets are among the main concerns of health professionals today. This is because instead of eating better, the general population is consuming more unhealthy foods. Nearly half of the diets popular in the United States contains only processed foods.
According to the research on processed foods, it is known that they are egregious to health. Not only do they have too many calories but also increase the risk of many health conditions.
For example, obesity, heart disease, and gastrointestinal issues all have a link with these processed foods. One of the most common digestive and bowel problem that has a connection with diets is Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease falls under the category of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). The symptoms of this issue can be hard to manage and may even worsen over time. Consequently, a person may then reach a stage that is not treatable.
Perhaps the most significant factor in this condition is diet. Previously, studies have shown that a clean diet comprising of whole grains, veggies, and fruits can be beneficial in many health problems.
A new study looks at this phenomenon further and further looks at how following such a diet may help with Crohn’s disease. The findings of the study are published in the journal Nutrients.

How Was the Study Conducted?
In accordance with the statistics, digestive issues are becoming more common day by day. Hence, there are also a lot of people suffering from the pain of intestinal bowel disease. Mainly, IBD can be of two forms – Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis.
Both conditions mainly affect the small intestine but can happen at any place included in the digestive system. However, the former is more commonly diagnosed than the latter. This is why it was important to have research on its potential treatment.
In the new paper on the subject, the scientists used data of people following a specific diet. This diet is also known as Crohn’s Disease Elimination Diet. The data acted as evidence of how diets may come in handy with Crohn’s as the rates of remission were up to sixty-two to seventy-one percent.
The particular diet has a lot of things that are similar to plant-based diets. For instance, the person following it has to eliminate dairy, processed, and packaged foods. The intake of fiber, fruits, and vegetables has to be increased.
In addition to the quoted data, the researchers examined a man who was a patient of Crohn’s disease. The participant had received a diagnosis of the condition at the age of twenty-five. Ever since then, he was on conventional medication.
This improved the symptoms of the disease but there were no signs of remission even after a year. In the following year, the patient then switched diet due to religious belief. In doing so, he cut out meats and dairy from his diet for a period of forty days.
What Were the Results?
Even though the change in diet was meant was a for days, the patient decided to continue it after seeing its effects. Moving to plant-based diets improved his signs considerably. Later, he also joined a yoga and fitness class.
Six months after the complete switch in lifestyle, the researchers observed that his colonoscopy showed an entirely different story. They were not able to tell whether the patient ever suffered from Crohn’s disease.
Conclusively, the researchers concluded that a high-fiber diet with more greens leads to improvement in the gut bacteria diversity.
However, they also said that one man’s case may not prove that another person may have the same effects. More researcher on a larger-scale may confirm the findings in the future.
