Naturally Reduce Hyper Pigmentation Related to Pregnancy

During pregnancy, every woman suffers from various skin problem. In most of the cases, these problems disappear with time. One of these problems is skin pigmentation.

What Is Skin Pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation can be defined as the “darkening of the natural skin tone”. It can occur during pregnancy or due to excessive sun exposure.

Darkening of the skin color is known as “Hyperpigmentation”.

During pregnancy, huge hormonal changes occur.  Chloasma appears on the face (below the eyes and the nose). These are dark patches.

During pregnancy, women can also develop a “Linea Nigra”. It is a dark, vertical line, crossing at the navel in the middle of the stomach. It can be caused by the stretching of the abdominal muscles which also develop pigmentation.

Women can also develop blotches of dark skin which somewhat resemble the shape of a mask. This condition is medically known as “chloasma” or “melasma gravidarum”.

The parts that are exposed to the sun usually develop dark patches on the forearms and the feet. Other sensitive parts like, your nipples and genitals also appear darker. These skin pigmentations normalize after a few months of pregnancy. In some women, it takes more time to resume the natural skin color.

Why Skin Pigmentation Occurs During Pregnancy?

In pregnant woman, various types of skin pigmentations occur which are commonly called as the “Mask of Pregnancy”. In Most cases, the dark spots appear on the face of a pregnant woman, like over her forehead or cheeks. Blotches can appear anywhere on the body.

During pregnancy, the production of hormones increases which results in increased pigmentation.

Following women are having the chances of developing skin pigmentation:

  • First pregnancy
  • Depression during pregnancy
  • Regular exposure to sunlight

How to Prevent Skin Pigmentation during Pregnancy?

Every pregnant woman doesn’t have a skin pigmentation problem but, in some cases, it happens. These pigmentations can be treated using natural ways.  Following natural ways can be used to treat skin pigmentation:

  • Sunscreen

The chances of Pigmentation during pregnancy can be slightly reduced using a suns screen.  Reducing sun exposure can also reduce the chances of pigmentation.

Sunscreen SPF 30 or higher must be used, if you are out in sun. Sunscreen should be used whether it’s sunny or not.

  • Avoid various skin products

Don’t try various skin products. During pregnancy, skin becomes sensitive and the reverse reaction of any product can cause pigmentation or dark patches.

  • Avoid medication

During pregnancy, medications should be used only after the recommendations of doctors. If you want to use medication like, Azelaic acid and Retinoic acid then use it after confirming from a doctor.

  • Use Folic acid

Some studies have shown that skin pigmentation is linked to folic acid deficiency. Therefore, get enough amount of folic acid to avoid pigmentation.

Natural Ways to Reduce Skin Pigmentation

Following natural ways can be used to reduce skin pigmentation during pregnancy:

  • Cucumber or Tomato juice

A mixture of cucumber juice and milk can be prepared. The application of this mixture on the affected skin can reduce pigmentation. It can also provide a soothing effect.  This mixture can be used on any skin type.

  • Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can be used to prevent skin pigmentation. Aloe Vera gel can reduce dark spots. This gel can be applied on the affected area for 15-20 minutes. After application, wash it off by warm water. It can be used on a daily basis for better results.

  • Almonds and Honey

Mix these two ingredients and make a fine paste. Apply this mixture on the skin and rinse it after 15-20 minutes.

  • Papaya

Papaya can be used to reduce skin pigmentation. Prepare a mixture of the following:

  • 2tbsp Papaya
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Aloe pulp

Apply his mixture on the pigmented skin and wash it after 30 minutes. Honey and Papaya help in the removal of dead cells and reduce pigmentation.

  • Papaya and Yogurt

A mixture of papaya and yogurt can help in the lightening of dark spots and patches. For this purpose, mix the following ingredients and apply it on face:

  • The ½ cup of mashed papaya pulp
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice
  • The ¼th cup of yogurt

Apply this mixture on the pigmented area and wash it off after 30 minutes.

  • Potato

Potato slices or paste can be applied to the affected pigmented skin. Its use is very effective for the reduction of dark spots and patches. For effective results, it should be used daily.

  • Mint leaves

Mint leaves can also do wonders. For this purpose, make a paste of mint leaves with water.

Apply this mixture on pigmented area and wash off after 15 minutes with Luke warm water. For effective results, use it twice or thrice in a week.

  • Sandalwood powder

Sandalwood powder is known for its skin whitening effects. A mixture of following ingredients can be used to make a paste:

  • Sandalwood powder
  • Turmeric powder
  • Milk

Make a paste of these ingredients and apply it on the affected area. After 10 minutes wash it off.

  • Orange peel powder

Take dried orange peels and make a powder of it.  Add some milk to this powder and apply on skin.  Then, rinse it off after 15-20 minutes. Vitamin C present in it can help in the reduction of skin pigmentation.


  • Avocadoes

Avocadoes can be applied to the skin to reduce pigmentation. Its juice or paste can be used. Use it on a regular basis for better results.

  • Lemon

Lemon is also effective against pigmented skin. Lemon juice can be applied to the skin directly but in some cases, it can cause a burning sensation. Therefore, add few drops of milk and rose water to lemon juice and apply it on the pigmented skin. Its very effective for pigmented skin.

  • Vitamin E

Vitamin E based oil can be applied to the affected area. It has the capability of reducing dark spots. Diet rich in vitamin E can also be effective for the reduction of dark spots and pigmentation.


  • Lactic acid cleanser

Lactic acid cleanser can be used to reduce pigmentation. It can purify, exfoliate, and brighten your skin. It also prevents skin dehydration. Following are the lactic acid cleansers:

Note: During pregnancy, skin pigmentation occurs because of hormonal changes. Skin pigmentation gradually fades in most women with the passage of time.
