Natural ways to reduce heavy metal exposure

Heavy metal exposure brings greater harm to your health. Heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury, when exposed to your body in abundance, prove to be very toxic. Exposure to heavy metals can lead to heavy metal poisoning.

This occurs due to the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the soft tissues of the body. Heavy metal poisoning depends on the type of heavy metal accumulated in the tissue. Thus it has varied symptoms. In general, it leads to the following,

  • Autoimmune disorder
  • Reproductive problems
  • Infections
  • Weakness
  • Brain damage
  • Bone loss

You may not be aware but every day you are exposed to heavy metals. They are present in the environment and cannot be completely eliminated. However, one can take steps to minimize the exposure naturally. This respective article discusses some natural ways to prevent or reduce heavy metal exposure.

Check your daily food choices

One of the common sources of heavy metal exposure is the food we eat. There are certain foods that have a higher risk of containing heavy metals. These foods include,

  • Fishes like tuna, king mackerel, marlin, shark, swordfish, and tilefish
  • Rice
  • Bone Broth

Large, predatory fish include mercury in large amount. Rice typically contains arsenic and lead is often found in bone broth. A coffee pot, for cooking rice, can lower its arsenic content. However, this might not help with bone broth because bones have stored lead in them.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should completely cut these foods from your diet. You must avoid eating them in abundance.

Choose detoxifying food items

Foods with a detoxifying potential can protect you from heavy metals. Cruciferous vegetables, fiber, phytates, probiotics, cilantro, and black sesame seeds are good examples of detoxifying foods. These foods can potentially help to eliminate heavy metals from the body.

Drink pure, filtered, and clean water

Heavy metals can contaminate the groundwater by contaminating the soil of underground aquifers. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 20 percent of the water systems in the country have unsafe levels of lead. This calls for immediate testing of the water, we drink or use, for heavy metals. People must invest in a high-quality water filtration system for their houses. They should make sure that the water they are drinking is clean and pure. Moreover, filtration would reduce their exposure to lead as well.

Choose cosmetics and personal care products wisely

Personal care products like sunscreen, nail polish, makeup, whitening toothpaste are very common in use. Surprisingly, they have been found to contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium, and aluminum. These toxic chemicals are deliberately used as added ingredients in consumer products. Thus, people are advised to switch to safer alternatives and avoid excessive use of such items.

An air purifier is a must for your house

The air we breathe contains a significant amount of heavy metals in it. Thus, an air purifier is must to filter out these toxic chemicals. Arsenic is one of the most common heavy metals that exist in the air. Cadmium, chromium, and nickel are also airborne heavy metals. The presence of these toxic substances float is a result of human activities like,

  • Using aerosol products
  • Driving cars
  • Running heavily-polluting industrial businesses

Your shoes may also contain heavy metals from outdoors and they may spread it around the house. Thus, taking your shoes off outside the house can also reduce the heavy metal exposure.
