A normal adult has 32 teeth which have erupted by around age 13. Basically, the wisdom teeth appear at last, at the back of the mouth. They generally appear between the age of 17 and 25, though sometimes they may appear many years later. Normally, there are 4 wisdom teeth in total, one in each of the furthest corners of the top and bottom gums.

Often, people have jaws which are too small for all 32 teeth to fit – 28 is the most we have room for. Thus, in case all other teeth are present, there may not be adequate space for the wisdom teeth to come through suitably.

Wisdom tooth pain may resolve on its own, but in certain cases, it will require either active home management or hospital treatment or dental surgery.

If there is enough room, then wisdom teeth will usually come through into a suitable position and cause no problem than any other tooth. Often there will be slight discomfort when they come through. But this will vanish once the tooth is fully in its position.

Here are some home remedies for wisdom tooth pain which you can use until your appointment.

Ice chips

An ice pack can be applied to the jaw which can help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Using ice cubes can also have a freezing effect. An ice pack can be used by holding it with a tea towel around it against the jaw for around15 minutes. Moreover, it can be applied off and on with 15-minute breaks until the pain has lessened. It also helps to reduce swelling.

Over-the-counter pain relievers

They can temporarily ease the distress associated with painful wisdom teeth.

Ibuprofen/Aspirin; anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or aspirin, will help reduce the pain. But make sure to take the recommended daily dosage.

Benzocaine; there are several different brands of mouth-numbing gels which are made of benzocaine. Any benzocaine agent can be used to reduce the pain in your gums, even Baby Orajel.

Saltwater

Prepare a mixture by using about 8 ounces of water with 2 teaspoons of salt. Rinse it to clean your mouth and help remove food particles and bacteria which could be causing a painful infection.

Wheatgrass

It is a great healer and can be used for the treatment of wisdom tooth pain. Its high chlorophyll content helps to lessen inflammation. Wheatgrass also helps to prevent the bacteria which can cause infections. It can heal wounds and prevent tooth decay.

Menthol

Menthol brings a chilling sensation to your skin when you touch it. It is a natural analgesic. It can be used as a remedy to relieve the wisdom teeth pain. For this purpose, dilute a mouthwash containing alcohol, peppermint flavor, and menthol before applying it to the affected area.

Turmeric

The anti-inflammatory and painkilling qualities of turmeric give it wonderful potential as a toothache remedy. One source commends rubbing crushed turmeric directly on inflamed gums. Further, you can also rinse your mouth with water that’s been boiled with 5 grams of turmeric and 2 cloves. Aloe vera

It will clean your mouth after meals and kill bacteria which could possibly cause infection.

Though these remedies can temporarily reduce wisdom tooth pain, the only permanent solution will probably be complete removal of the wisdom teeth. This practice has become routine. Only your dentist or oral surgeon can fully explain you the potential risks and benefits involved.

Wisdom tooth pain should not be taken casually or lightly. While at-home pain management is an option, in most cases extraction of a wisdom tooth is the best way to ease wisdom tooth pain and protect your oral and overall health and comfort.
