“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is a phrase nearly everyone has heard while growing up. Every other person agrees that skipping dinner and not breakfast is a better idea. Despite this prevalent idea, only three-quarters of the people in the United States and two-thirds of those in the United Kingdom have breakfast on a daily basis.
Why does breakfast have so much more importance? The reason is quite self-explanatory. It is the name of the meal that tells everything. Breakfast as in break-the-fast suggests ending the long no-food intake period during the night.

It was noted that people who had larger breakfasts in comparison with dinners or lunches had a lower body mass index (BMI).
The researchers in this study claimed breakfast decreased caloric intake while improving the diet because of higher nutritional or more specifically, fiber content in the meal.
The problem with this study was it did not take other factors into consideration. It did not clear whether the main cause was breakfast or people who skipped breakfast just had higher chances to be obese.
To answer this question, researchers looked at 52 obese women with the same caloric intake in a diet plan. Half them skipped breakfast while others had it. The researchers then concluded it was not the breakfast that helped them lose weight.
The change in the routine was mainly responsible for weight loss. Both groups lost almost the same amount of weight. So, breakfast is actually not the main thing in both weight gain and loss.
What Is the Connection Between Breakfast and Obesity?
According to researchers, people who skip breakfast may be more likely to be obese simply because they lacked important information regarding fitness and nutrition.
A 2016 review of 10 studies showed that there actually is not enough evidence to support that breakfast is a big influence on weight loss and management. Other claims such as breakfast affecting cortisol levels in the body also lack evidence.
There is actually no final conclusion that applies to every person. The type of breakfast can also suit one person while it may not suit another.
For example, people with certain conditions such as diabetes are said to be better off with a lower-GI breakfast like porridge. Others do not have this compulsion. The most important thing is to eat healthy and balanced and not concentrate on one meal only while skipping the others.
