Can Skipping Breakfast Affect Your Work Performance?

In a recent research at a German University, it was found that nutrients that you take in breakfast as the first meal of your day, highly influences your decision-making ability throughout the day.

It is a generally accepted fact that food does have an impact on our mental and psychological health equally as it does to our physical health.

What About Breakfast?

In a unique research, it was claimed that taking high carbohydrate and fat breakfast with low protein would help you avoid making a bad business deal on that day.

The notion suggests that high carb breakfasters would choose to walk away, rather than succumbing to unfair business deals. While high protein breakfasters are more likely to accept whatever comes in their way even if it means a loss to them.

The research has discovered the relation between the levels of confidence with the food intake. High starch or carbohydrate diet stimulates the brain to release a chemical called ‘dopamine’. This brain chemical dopamine, causes the person to feel more rewarded, and happier thus boosting the self – confidence.

Such people tend to believe that they would be rewarded later on. Whereas an inverse happens with people on the high protein diet, their decision – making ability is greatly reduced and they tend to rely on the stimulated need to take whatever they can get.

What About Previous Theories?

Similar claims, however, have been made by the previous theories where the low level of dopamine has been associated with the addictive behavior, in such cases, people need a ‘fix’ immediately.

On the basis of these claims, researchers of the German University tested people where they were first asked about their breakfast and then were asked to participate in a computer simulating business deal.

The participants were offered a partial sum of money in the ratio of less than 50:50. Which meant that more than half of the sum of money would be kept by the person offering the deal. The participants were then left to decide whether they would accept the unfair split of money, or would reject it.

The results showed that 53% of people on high carbohydrate rejected the deal compared to other participants.

To testify the results, a controlled laboratory experiment was arranged by the scientists. Where a group of people was given controlled breakfast.

One group was fed with the high ratio of carb to proteins and fats; 80% of carbohydrate, 10% fat and 10% protein.

The other group, on the other hand, was fed with the low ratio of carbs to proteins and fats; 50% carbohydrates, 25% fats, and 25% proteins.

The conclusions of the study testified the claims, where 69% people on high carbohydrate rejected the deal compared to 60% of the people on the low carb diet.

Previous studies from time to time have shown that food intake and patterns do impact our behavior such as low blood sugar level have been associated with lessening self – control.
