Popular Medicines May Cause Dementia – Study Shows
Majority of the people around the world trust medicines for treating health problems. These drugs can cure everyday issues such as cough and flu. They are also important in serious problems such as coronary heart diseases.
At the same time, many of the medications that are given to different patients have their particular side effects. These negative impacts are well-known by health professionals. This is why they only give a specific dose and session.
Some of the medicines can lead to conditions that might not be known. Often, these effects only show up whenever there is new research on the topic.
There is now a new trend to take as fewer drugs, be it prescription or over-the-counter, But some of them can be dangerous when taken in a small amount as well. Some medicines are also not available on the market anymore.
A person would be surprised to find out some of the most popularly used drugs can be dangerous. They can have side effects even when taken in a normal amount.

Which are the drugs which have been recently studied?

A new study conducted on common insomnia medication as well as anti-allergens has shown something new. The research says that both of them can increase the risk of developing dementia. In fact, all anticholinergic drugs are seen to have a link to dementia.
Anticholinergic drugs are the most commonly taken medicines throughout the world. These include Unison, Benadryl, Advil PM, and Dramamine. Also, antidepressants like Paxil and painkillers like Demerol also from the same category.
There have also been many studies conducted before that have given a similar conclusion to the newest one. The recent study was held by researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine. It was published in JAMA Neurology and stands out because of the methods used in it.
The researchers included in the study observed the effects of taking anticholinergic drugs. They used brain imaging methods such as PET and MRI. The team concluded that people who took a lot of such medicines had altered brain function

How successful was the method?

The brain image method worked better than most. It showed that people taking anticholinergic drug had a decrease in their brain metabolism. It also came to an increase in brain atrophy. Majority of them also scored better on memory tests.
Before this, the researchers at the University of Washington had also seen similar effects. They also saw hay fever drugs and sleep aids and found that both of them increase the risk of dementia.
Although this study only looked at people who were taking the medicines for at least three years or more, it is still an important finding. This is because people nowadays do not think twice before taking some medicines.

What are some other medicines that can cause dementia?

Besides the drugs mentioned above, there are also many others who have the same effects. Many have the ability to cause dementia.
The medicines which contain tiotropium, most of which are used to treat respiratory conditions such as COPD and asthma such as Spiriva and Atrovent have been specifically seen to elevate the chances of developing dementia.
Other anticholinergic medicines include the ones which contain solifenacin. This includes Vesicare which is used in the treatment of an overactive bladder. Antidepressants too have the tendency to lead to dementia.

What Can Be Done?

Though many of the drugs may have anticholinergic effects, stopping them is not good. Most doctors do not suggest leaving the course. Instead, it is better to talk to the doctor or health professional. Discuss any potential side effects, and decide what can be done about it.
Do not randomly stop taking any medicine especially when you have a serious problem. In a similar way, medicinal courses for minor health conditions are also important. Suddenly stopping can cause many problems.
For example, one of the main problems with not finishing a course is resistance. Taking too many medicines and not even finishing the appropriate time can be harmful. It can even have far greater effects than what most people imagine.
Antibiotic resistance is one of the most dangerous problems in today’s world. It has been causing great worry. In cases where a person is suffering from resistance, even the most trivial health can be hard to treat.
