Stress can cause long-term health damages- the new study warns

A recently published study, supported by the National Institute on Aging and the National Institutes of Health, suggests that taking even a minor stress daily will lead to complicated health concerns in future.

Stress is no matter bad for you. It is not a planned thing. Anything such as finances, work, relationships or anything may induce a stress. It is not even required for it to be a real problem. The annual stress survey from American Psychological Association (APA) tells that average stress levels in the United States (U.S.) have been increased from 4.9 to 5.1 on a scale from 1 to 10 in the year 2015.

If you allow these small stress factors to experience negative thoughts and emotions that are damaging to your health. This stress is a risk factor for many health problems such as anxiety, depression, chronic, cardiovascular problems etc. We often assume that there are only certain types of major stress factors such as a breakup, loss of job, medical condition etc.

There is a new research that tells that even a small stressor that may affect your health in long term and short term both. You have no idea but a simple misunderstanding with a friend may also lead to the health issues in the longer run. This stress factor increases with time and days.

A team of researchers from the University of California studied this “casual stress”. This research concludes that negative emotions and stress can cause serious complications in the long-term physical health of a person.

These research findings were published in a peer-review journal Psychological Science, as an association of the Association for Psychological Science. Click here to read the complete research. It is available online and anyone can read it.

What does this study highlight?

The prime area that this research signifies is to take stress seriously. It tells that there is no way that a stress can be negligible.

Any stress, be it of any type and any severity, becomes less frustrating when you put effort into releasing it. The minor research can even start when you have an argument with a friend or don’t meet a work deadline.

These things are so tiny that people will actually suggest you let it go. The same way was to be analyzed in this study that how “letting go” of daily frustration makes your life easy and healthy.

The research team looked for all such answers by examining the data that they got from  Midlife in the United States National Longitudinal Study of Health and Well-being. This study was completed on survey-based question among participants. They were asked to daily fill a survey report for 8 days.

During these 8 days, the participants were asked to record their experiences from last 24 hours on various subjects such as how much time they felt negative. These negative emotions included nervousness, worthlessness, hopelessness, loneliness, fear, jitteriness, irritability, shame, upset, anger, frustration, restlessness, or feeling “that everything was an effort.”

Also, the participants were questioned for what triggers these emotions in them in routine. This is not the end. After 10 years of this survey, the participants were again asked to report their condition. Especially the information on their health. They were asked whether or not they developed any chronic disease or any other health problem. Anything that hinders their daily tasks or causes stress.

The researchers came to know that those participants that were unable to combat with negative feelings arisen from daily stress eventually developed

more health issues that includes chronic illnesses and functional limitations, in later years.

The research also focuses that whenever people think of stress inducers, that may trigger a stress response, they always think of bigger things such as trauma, injury, loss etc. What they completely ignore is that more than major life events, these small things impact your mental health more.

How to let the routine stress go?

The relationship between stress and health problems was still there even after 10 years. They were consistent among those people who didn’t get rid of them at first place. The effects of stress on health were common in both genders, regardless of their educational qualification, health at baseline and other factors.

This reflects that health outcome is not just to show how people react to routine stress triggers or number of these triggers. The only way they impact the health is how the person feels next day after experiencing with these stress triggers.

Have you ever thought that why do these minor things trigger health problems? The researchers also answer this question. As per researchers, there are two reasons. One of those negative emotions when you keep them will activate stress relation system on a rather persistent manner. It will make your body weak and you will be more susceptible for immune attack.

Second reason is that negative mood can lead to an overall damaging behavior in the coming years. It will make the mental health of the person to deteriorate.

The only risk factor here is the stress, which is not even an impossible task. People should try to get rid of this casual stress for their own good.
