With increased studies and development, more and more products are appearing on the aisles of stores and in markets. New beautification products are specifically popular with a brand or different items launched every other day.

The hair are one of the most important parts of a person’s appearance. Many are concerned about them and try to keep them looking healthy and beautiful. However, seasonal changes, pollution, and poor diet make it difficult to do so.

Dandruff and dry scalp are among the most commonly faced issues by both men and women. Not only it is unattractive but also irritating and uncomfortable. In severe cases, it may very visible on shirts and collars and lead to public embarrassment.

There are many reasons you can have dandruff. The biggest reason for having it in summers is over-exfoliation or lack of water intake.

Dandruff also has problems associated with it. It causes inflammation of scalp leading to various other skin diseases.

In infants and newborns, there are small patches on the scalp having greasy, yellowish appearance. This type of dandruff is known as cradle cap.

Having dandruff can cause discomfort and may ruin your image. It is better to know the reasons and avoid it especially when the heat is extremely high.

What Are the Causes of Hair Dandruff?

The causes of dandruff may differ from one person to another. Some of the common causes of dandruff are as follows:

  • Yeast

People are at greater risk of getting dandruff who are more sensitive to yeast. In damp areas and moist weather, it may worsen the conditions further. The ultraviolet-A (UV-A) radiations coming from Sun counteracts with the yeast over the scalp.

In warmer weather particularly in summers, dandruff gets better but it gets worse during the winter season with increased solar flux during the daytime.

  • Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis results in the oily skin and people affected by it tend to have more dandruff in their head. In this condition, the skin becomes greasy and covered with white or yellow flaky scales.

It affects many areas of skin and may spread to the back of ears. The fungus Malassezia is also linked with this dermatitis. It feeds on the oils secreted by hair follicles and rapidly spreads across the scalp if no remedial measures are taken.

It might cause serious threats to people where it grows at an increased rate. The overactive growth causes the irritation in the scalp and also produces extra skin cells. After death, the cells fall off, get mixed with oil released from scalp and forms dandruff.

  • Dry Skin

Dry skin results in more flaky skin and tends to have more chances of dandruff if proper hair treatment is not done. The over-heated rooms in winters cause itching over skin and results in the flaking skin.

On dry skin, dandruff appears as non-oily flakes. It could be treated by proper oiling in hair in order to maintain the moisture.

  • Hair Brushing

Regular brushing the hair sheds away the skin regularly. It reduces the risk of getting dandruff by proper combing. The blood flow through vessels also remains regulated by brushing hair regularly.

  • Skin Care Products

Skincare routines differ from one person to another. Some might have completely different preference for products and techniques from the other.

Where it is good to care for skin, it is also important to know that substandard hair care products may trigger inflammation in the skin causing it to become red, itchy and scaly.

In addition, the buildup of dead skin cells in scalp leads to dandruff. Less shampooing causes more accumulation of oil in hair, adding salt to injury.

Eating food high in Zinc, Vitamin B, essential fatty acids and other macro and micronutrients are required by the body for making defense strong against invading microorganisms like bacteria and fungus.

  • Age and Mental Stress

Dandruff is most likely to occur in a period from adolescence through middle age. It may also occur for a longer period of time, for lifelong. With respect to sex, women are more affected by dandruff and this is because of related hormonal response.

Mental stress is a precursor to various health problems. From physical weakness to growing skin problems, the mental stress aggravates the conditions at each and every step.

  • Other Reasons

People with certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and other disorders tend to get more frequent dandruff. This fungal infection, Tinea capitis, is aided with the spread of ringworm which grows over scalp causing dandruff.

Medically disturbed patients and adults with Parkinson’s disease are more at risk of getting skin illnesses. Such patients are prone to dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. What actually makes them more sensitive? Probably the weak immune system.

How to Prevent Hair Dandruff?

  • Wash Hair Regularly

Maintain hygienic conditions. Wash hairs after a day or two. Lather the shampoo in hair and gently massage the scalp to help break up the build-up on the scalp.

Always avoid using too much hot water during the shower in winters. Rinse it with slightly warm water for proper removal of oil excreted from the scalp.

Take special care after gym, sweat will make your dandruff worse. Try getting a shower as soon as possible. Also after cleaning the room, some dust may get into your hair. Rinse them properly to clear it away.

  • Use Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Wash your hair with any good anti-dandruff shampoo. It will surely help to clear away the mild pesky flakes of dandruff after using twice or thrice.

According to American Academy of Dermatology, shampoos containing coal Tar have a tendency to discolor blonde, grey or white hair. Choose extra carefully the shampoo if you have light-colored hair.

  • Avoid Hair Styling Products

It has become a common practice to use hair sprays, gels, and mousse while styling hair. Try not to use all such products, they add to build up of dandruff at the scalp. Smooth and shiny hair are easy to go and look good anyway.

For glossy looks put few oil drops on hand, rubs them together, and apply to hair. It will work super perfectly for any party or get together maintaining length and making hair sleek.

  • Avoid Scratching

Dandruff may cause scalp feel itchy and irritating. Oil secretion from sebaceous glands adds more to this irritation. Simply avoid scratching, it may cause injuries to the skin aggravating the problem.

  • Consult a Dermatologist

If the time period of dandruff has become too long or it is continuously increasing showing sign of serious medical condition, immediately consult a dermatologist. Usually, seborrheic dermatitis does not need a consultation with the doctor.

Dandruff shows signs of infection and redness. The skin may get cracked and swell as a result. Initially try to treat it with known home remedies, apply oil but regularly wash hair and ensure its proper removal from the scalp.

In case of any complication with hair dandruff, don’t experiment with it at home and see the doctor immediately. Follow the instructions carefully and in case of any irritation cease the treatment you’re following and ask the doctor for an alternate.
